Finding one deserted puppy is heartbreaking, but encountering an entire litter left on their own is even more alarming.
Each year, countless pups are abandoned by owners who neglect them, leaving them exposed to illness, hunger, and harsh conditions.
In Alabama, six small puppies were discovered in a terrible state. Without a mother’s care, their frail forms bore clear signs of disease, and mange had severely affected them. They were frail, struggling, and their prospects appeared grim.
Rapid rescue and appropriate care gave them a fighting chance, saving them from a potential grim end.
A Litter in Distress
En route to work, a gentleman noticed slight movements in the nearby woods. Upon checking it out, he was disturbed to find six tiny, hairless pups clinging to each other, trembling.
Their red, irritated skin made them appear wild and unidentifiable.
Recognizing their isolation and peril, he gently gathered the puppies and took them to a shelter in Sylacauga, Alabama.
Shelter staff promptly provided nourishment, warmth, and initial care.
However, the puppies were in worse shape than the shelter could manage.
They suffered from severe mange and were alarmingly frail, needing advanced veterinary attention.
Rescue Efforts Initiate
Jaquie Cobb from Second City Canine Rescue (SCCR) in Illinois answered the shelter’s plea for assistance and took immediate action.
“They were left in the wild when they were too young to be separated from their mom,” SCCR noted.
The puppies, without any hair and so small, led rescuers to consider they could be from a small breed, like Cocker Spaniels.
Each weighed merely five pounds, aligning with this belief.
The puppies were moved to Auburn Veterinary College for critical care, where veterinarians confirmed they were experiencing sarcoptic mange. Their state was so dire that staff had to wear masks during their bathing due to the odor.
Uncovering Their True Breed
After numerous weeks of medical care, as the puppies gradually recovered, their hair started to regrow in tiny curls.
Rescuers suspected they might be Poodle crosses, but clarity was still lacking. A DNA test was performed to solve the issue. The findings left everyone astounded.
Amazingly, the puppies turned out to be purebred Great Pyrenees.
As the pups gained more size and their dense, fluffy white fur became evident, their true breed identity unfolded.
Within a few short weeks, they began resembling the stately guardian dogs they were destined to be.
A Fresh Start
The puppies found temporary homes with foster families, where they learned social behaviors, good manners, and adjusted to indoor living.
Over the next few months, their transformation was nothing short of remarkable. They became stronger, healthier, and more playful, readying for adoption.
Today, the pups are flourishing, each nearing their ultimate size of 100 pounds. Despite their challenging start, they continue to be loving, lively, and brimmed with joy.
Their story is a strong testament to the impact of second chances for even the most vulnerable lives.
