Countless strays roam the streets, subsisting on meager scraps and holding onto hope for a better tomorrow.
Tanner, one such stray from Houston, Texas, longed for the moment someone would rescue him. In the summer of 2023, his wish came true when he was taken to a local shelter.
The staff quickly recognized Tanner’s uniqueness.
Despite being at the shelter, Tanner’s dream of a forever home persisted. Weeks went by, and adoption eluded him. The crowded shelter had to put him on the euthanasia list, casting a shadow over his fate.
During this bleak period, Madeline Garvis Smith, a passionate dog advocate, met Tanner. She was captivated when Tanner warmly embraced her. Moved by his longing for affection, she said, “Some dogs just touch your soul. Tanner was undoubtedly one.”
Garvis Smith highlighted Tanner’s story on her Instagram, portraying him as a bundle of love awaiting his chance.
This cuddly one-year-old pup had a penchant for leaping into volunteers’ arms, craving their affection and often enjoying being held like an infant.
In a plea to save Tanner, Garvis Smith reached out for a temporary foster. Kari, a dedicated foster mom, stepped forward.
As Tanner prepared to depart the shelter, he tenderly hugged his shelter friends, expressing his gratitude.
With his tail wagging in happiness, Tanner stepped into the world outside the shelter. Kari’s first gesture? A loving kiss, signifying her joy and relief over saving this special pup.
Though initially reserved at his foster home, Tanner soon basked in the warmth of his caregivers, enjoying every moment of affection.
Tanner’s journey will soon lead him to the Animal Rescue Network of New England, New Hampshire, where he’ll await his forever home.
