A 12-Year-Old Left His Puppy at a Shelter With a Toy: “So He Won’t Forget Me”

A 12-Year-Old Left His Puppy at a Shelter With a Toy: “So He Won’t Forget Me”

The puppy arrived in a cardboard box. Beside him were a stuffed toy and a handwritten note from a boy who was only 12.

The note ended with a line that explained why the toy was there.

“I left him a stuffed animal so he won’t forget me,” it read, in translation.

In February 2020, the story of the puppy left outside Refugio Xollin in Mexico began reaching people far beyond the shelter. His name would become known as René.

The boy who had left him there introduced himself as Andrés. He had written down what was happening at home and asked the shelter to help.

The toy and the letter were small things to leave with a puppy. Together, they showed how much this goodbye meant to the child who had written it.

According to the handwritten note, Andrés and his mother had decided to leave the puppy in the shelter’s care without telling his father.

He wrote that his father had been hurting the dog and was thinking about selling him. One kick, the boy said, had injured the puppy’s tail.

Andrés asked the people at the shelter to help René and look after him.

That was the reason for the box outside the door. A child and his mother were trying to get their puppy somewhere they believed he would be safe.

The last line made the separation especially painful to read. Andrés wanted the puppy to have something with him that would keep a connection between them.

He had given René a chance to be cared for, along with a toy intended to remind him of the boy who loved him.

René needed treatment for his injuries after arriving at the shelter.

In a report published that February, animal welfare organization 30 Millions d’Amis spoke with Xollin volunteer Rosa María Segura about his condition. She described a serious infection and a fractured tail that was healing but still causing some discomfort.

The puppy was receiving antibiotics and other care. Rosa María explained that the shelter wanted him fully recovered and ready before he could join a family.

Behind the photograph being shared online was a young dog who needed time, attention, and veterinary help.

The shelter was also considering what a suitable home would look like. Rosa María described a process involving information from applicants, home visits, and meetings with potential adopters.

There was work to do after opening the box and reading the letter. The people caring for René had to turn the boy’s request into a plan for his recovery and future.

As the shelter shared the story, the response grew.

Reports at the time described more than 300 adoption requests from families interested in René. People also left messages of support for Andrés, moved by what he had done for his puppy.

A small dog, a stuffed toy, and a child’s letter had made people pay attention.

The shelter used that attention to speak about its other animals, too. Staff reminded potential adopters that around 120 other dogs in their care also needed homes.

Some people reached out to ask how they could become involved and help the rescue. René’s story had brought new interest to the people looking after him and the other animals there.

For readers following along, there was still a question: after the treatment, the messages, and all those applications, where would René grow up?

A February 2026 follow-up interview published by Bored Panda and republished by AOL provided an answer.

The shelter team said René had recovered and stayed with them. After considering his needs, they had decided they could give him the care and protection he needed at Xollin.

Six years after his arrival, they described a happy, healthy dog who enjoyed food, play, and affection. He had been shy at first, they said, but had gradually become comfortable and grown into a much-loved member of the shelter.

The update included photographs of René as an adult, showing how much he had grown since the small puppy in the cardboard box.

The team also shared what little they had learned about Andrés and his mother: they said the two had separated from his father and moved away.

The interview gave people who remembered the original story a chance to see that René’s care had continued long after the first wave of attention.

Andrés had asked for help in the words he had available at 12 years old. The people who found his puppy answered by caring for him.

The little toy gave that request a detail people could remember. The years that followed showed what the shelter had done with it.
