From Police Academy to Palace: Gavel’s Heartwarming Journey to Vice-Regal Stardom
Every police dog’s journey begins with a dream, rigorous training, and the aspiration to serve and protect.
Gavel, a spirited six-week-old German Shepherd, embarked on this path in 2016, joining 40 other hopefuls in Queensland, Australia’s police dog training program.
With his lineage rooted in esteemed working police dogs, Gavel’s future seemed set in stone.
However, destiny had other plans. Gavel’s affectionate nature and penchant for pats over patrols led to an unexpected twist.
While his overly friendly demeanor might have been deemed unsuitable for police work, it opened doors to an even grander stage.

A Royal Transformation: Gavel’s journey took him to Queensland’s Government House in April 2016, initially for police training.
Over the year, he embraced basic obedience training and proudly sported a uniform bearing the Queensland Police Service emblem.
But Gavel’s heart leaned more towards treats and affection than policing.

Despite the initial setback, Gavel’s charm won over the staff and the Governor of Queensland.
Recognizing his unique qualities, in February 2017, Gavel was ceremoniously appointed as Queensland’s inaugural Vice-Regal Dog, complete with a “paw-signed” contract!
