“He was nothing but skin and bones…” 💔
The morning of November 8, 2024, started like any other for a Detroit security guard making his routine stop at a local gas station. But what he discovered near the dumpster would change everything—and save a precious life hanging by a thread.
“He spotted this tiny puppy desperately eating trash beside the dumpster,” Liz Haack shared with The Dodo, describing the heartbreaking scene that would soon turn into a miracle.

The sight was devastating—a white-and-brown pit bull puppy, severely malnourished and utterly abandoned. But this kindhearted security guard knew he couldn’t walk away from such suffering.
“The temperature had dropped significantly, and there wasn’t another soul around—canine or human,” Haack explained. “This hero gently lifted the puppy and placed him safely in a box. Remembering that his coworker volunteered with a dog rescue organization, he brought the pup to work and immediately reached out for emergency help.”

Rebel Dogs Detroit stepped in without hesitation, welcoming the malnourished puppy and sharing his photo online to find an urgent foster placement. That’s when fate intervened—Haack, a veterinary technician and co-founder of Colony Cat Club Detroit who typically fostered only kittens, saw the post and felt an instant, overwhelming pull.
“The moment I saw his photo, something deep inside me knew I had to help him,” Haack recalled. “There was no hesitation—I immediately volunteered to foster this little fighter.”

Once her foster application received approval, Haack wasted no time driving to collect the puppy she would name Joey. Nothing could have prepared her for the reality of his condition when she finally held him in her arms.
“He was even more fragile than his photos suggested,” Haack remembered with emotion. “At barely 5 weeks old, he weighed only 3 pounds. The moment I cradled him, tears welled up in my eyes—all I could think about was protecting this vulnerable little soul who had endured so much.”

Bringing Joey home marked the beginning of his healing journey, but it also revealed just how close he had come to losing his fight for survival.
“Once we got Joey settled at home, the full extent of his condition became clear—he wouldn’t have survived another day on the streets,” Haack said soberly. “His ribs were visible through his thin coat, his belly was distended from starvation and parasites, and he was severely dehydrated and hypothermic.”

Despite Joey’s critical condition, Haack’s veterinary background proved invaluable. She immediately began an intensive care regimen—administering deworming medication, providing essential fluids, offering frequent small meals, and maintaining his body temperature around the clock.
The odds seemed insurmountable for this tiny warrior, but Haack’s dedicated care and Joey’s incredible spirit began working miracles together.
“Initially, he was so weak he could barely lift his head, but after receiving proper nutrition and hydration, his personality started emerging,” Haack documented. “Being so young, his greatest needs were warmth, comfort, and endless cuddles—which we were more than happy to provide around the clock!”

Over the following weeks and months, Joey’s transformation was nothing short of miraculous. His weight steadily increased, his affectionate nature blossomed, and he formed an unbreakable bond with Haack’s 2-year-old golden retriever companion.

Eventually, Joey had recovered completely and was ready for his forever home. However, when the rescue mentioned interested adopters, Haack discovered something unexpected about her own feelings.
“I spent an entire day in tears, then called the rescue to say I wanted to make the adoption official—I simply couldn’t imagine our family without Joey,” Haack confessed. “He had become such an integral part of our lives that letting him go felt impossible.”

That day, Haack made Joey’s adoption official, and their bond has only grown stronger since. They recently marked the first anniversary of his rescue, with many more years of adventures and love stretching ahead.

While Joey’s early life remains a mystery, what matters most is his bright future. Thanks to a compassionate stranger’s intervention and Haack’s unwavering dedication, this resilient pup has left his traumatic past far behind.
“From day one, our mission has been creating a life so filled with love that Joey would forget whatever hardships he endured as a baby,” Haack reflected. “He shows no signs of trauma from his past, and honestly, the joy he’s brought to our family has exceeded every expectation we had.”
Joey’s incredible journey from a starving puppy eating garbage to a beloved family member proves that love truly can heal all wounds. His story reminds us that sometimes the most broken souls just need someone to believe in their potential for transformation. Today, Joey thrives as living proof that every dog deserves a second chance—and that sometimes, the animals we rescue end up rescuing us right back.
