Some are hidden and dusty, wearing once-vibrant coats now faded. Merely getting through each day, they yearn for kindness that seems elusive.
When Brandy was taken to a shelter in Illinois, her fur was messy and colorless, a worn-out mix of gray and brown. Despite her tired appearance, something gentle and hopeful sparkled in her eyes.
It was time for a significant chapter in her journey.
From Dirty To Dazzling White
Upon reaching Border Tails Rescue in Illinois, it seemed unlikely Brandy could change so drastically.
Her fur was twisted and matted, a dusty grayish-brown covering. At first, rescuers thought that was her true color.
When founder Harleigh Garcia examined her, the reality was unveiled: Brandy’s gray hue was merely dirt collected over neglected years.
“I was like, ‘Oh my God, it’s just dirt,’” Garcia remarked to The Dodo. “I’ve been deceived.”
Brandy, along with another dog, had been surrendered in a sorrowful state. Both were grimy, infested with fleas, and weakened by neglect.
“I would assume she had to be outside,” Garcia said. “Or living somewhere very, very filthy, because I’ve never seen a dog that dirty.”
Saviors filled a tub with soothing water, gently placing Brandy in it. She remained calm as the water turned murky. Bit by bit, the dirt fell away, unveiling a gleaming white coat beneath the grime.
Border Tails Rescue later posted her transformation online, exclaiming, “This little lady arrived looking more like a dust bunny than a dog… but after one good bath, SNOWBALL!!!”
Discovering Brandy’s Kind Heart
During her check-up, the vet noticed her pupils were uneven and speculated on possible hearing issues. Garcia mentioned Brandy might be a “double merle,” a genetic trait often linked to white coats and blue eyes, with potential hearing or vision problems.
Despite her earlier struggles, Brandy’s sweet demeanor soon shone through. She was shy at first, twitching at quick movements, yet the team allowed her to approach in her own time.
“She is the sweetest,” Garcia said. “She walks well on a leash, she’s very cuddly and calm. She gets a little scared with fast hand movements, but she’s so brave.”
Over the next few days, Brandy’s trust grew. She wagged her tail at the sight of her caregivers and leaned in for affection. The once timid dog began to open her heart to people again.
Soon, Border Tails Rescue declared Brandy was suitable for foster-to-adopt placement.
Before long, she found a permanent home, a place filled with the love and warmth she had been searching for.
Now, Brandy’s spotless coat radiates just like her soul. She has gone from being overlooked to being a beloved pet who finally understands what it means to belong.
