With an innate curiosity, dogs often explore their world mouth-first. While most of the time that results in harmless play, there are moments when this curiosity can lead them into trouble.
Belongings like shoes, gadgets, and furniture sometimes become part of their exploration, leading to unexpected and problematic outcomes.
In Tulsa, Oklahoma, one pooch found a phone charger equipped with a lithium-ion battery and saw it as a fun chew toy.
This innocent play quickly became a serious matter when the charger ignited, and without anyone to intervene, the fire rapidly intensified.
When The Fire Started

The Tulsa Fire Department released footage of the event, quickly gaining attention on social media and nationwide news platforms.
In the video, a curious dog holds a lithium-ion charger in its jaw as it climbs onto a bed, energetically gnawing. Nearby, another dog rests on a couch, unaware of the looming danger.
Without warning, sparks fly as the device bursts, setting the bed on fire. The dog drops it, but the blaze spreads swiftly across the mattress.

Alarmed, both dogs begin barking frantically but cannot stop the fire’s progress. Realizing the peril, they escape through a pet door just as firefighters arrive to combat the flames.
“In May, we responded to a blaze instigated by a damaged lithium-ion battery. Though the house suffered major damage, the family’s two dogs and cat escaped unharmed, thanks to a pet door,” noted the Tulsa Fire Department in their video description.
The animals avoided injury, but the outcome could have been disastrous without that escape route. Had anyone been inside during the fire, the consequences might have been far worse.
This incident highlights the critical need to keep hazardous items away from inquisitive pets to avert potential house fires.
Concealed Perils of Lithium-Ion Batteries
Although firefighters swiftly managed the fire, the house still sustained considerable damage. Fortunately, all occupants were unharmed.

Andy Little, a representative of the Tulsa Fire Department, warned about the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, stressing the need for public awareness.
“These batteries store a large amount of energy compactly, but when released uncontrollably, they can cause heat, emit flammable and noxious gases, and even explode,” Little explained.
He further noted that factors such as overheating, overcharging, using the wrong chargers, or physical damage can lead to these dangerous scenarios.
Since pets can’t recognize these dangers, it’s crucial for owners to pet-proof their environments. As fires linked to lithium-ion batteries become more frequent, maintaining safety is vital.
“Together, we can minimize risks and safeguard our homes and communities,” Little concluded.
